FOR HOT 100′S “HOT HAIR – SHORT AND SHARP”, STUFF MAG CONSULTED THE EXPERT: CELEBRITY STYLIST SANDY POIRIER!
Stuff Magazine’s always-anticipated Hot 100 Issue hit newsstands this week, which OF COURSE you already know because you’ve seen our sizzling new ad on the inside front page. Well, keep flipping through to read Sandy Poirier’s words of wisdom regarding one of his edgy, asymmetrical signature cuts. As someone who has personally been on the receiving end of Sandy’s short-hair rockstar acumen, I can say that Stuff definitely chose the right authority! Read the full blurb with Sandy’s thoughts below, from Stuff’s site:
“If you still think gorgeous hair looks like what you see in a shampoo commercial – long, flowing locks cascading over a model’s shoulder, shimmering in the sun and bouncing like a slinky as she bounds up stairs (“Gosh, I’m going to be looking fabulous for my imaginary meeting!”) – think again. “Pretty” is passé, says Sandy Poirier, owner of Shag (840 Summer Street, Third Floor, South Boston, 617.268.2500). Men and women are going for super-short clipper cuts on the sides, with longer, and frequently asymmetrical, textured razor cuts on top (leave the scissors at home – you want it to look like Freddy Krueger drummed his finger-claws on your head). The key: the cuts are left unblended for maximum edgy appeal. Besides the easy maintenance (add some product, tussle, and you’re good to go), we think it’s a cool unisex cut that looks good on girls (Rihanna rocks it, and Kelly Osbourne usually has some variation), guys (David Beckham’s been spotted with the coif), and anyone rocking androgynous flair with their hair (the punk-rock crew of Semi Precious Weapons). Think of it as business on the sides, party on top – hell, party all over.”
I wasn’t kidding when I said SHAG cutter Kara Hurston is one to keep an eye on. Her work was recently highlighted in our Grave Gardens shoot (and ad) and on socialite Tinsley Mortimer at the Bebe Fashion Show recently at The Estate in Boston. Maybe this had something to do with why lesbiannightlife.com named Kara their latest FACE “IT” GIRL. Go read Jenn Marquez’s great interview with Kara about hair and life (is there any separation for us?) and browse the photo gallery!Kara Hurston, Lesbiannightlife.com, PRESS

In the April issue of Beauty Entertainment magazine, SHAG was named the 45th hottest salon in America. Thanks to BE and congratulations to the other salons who were named! You can view the full digital issue here.Beauty Entertainment Magazine, Sandy Poirier, Shag Wins Again
After our fabulous cocktail party last night celebrating artist Dr. Lakra and Sandy speaking as part of a panel at the ICA, the SHAG staff woke up to more good news…we found out today that we won for Best Women’s Haircut in the 2010 Phoenix Poll!
“The motto at this Southie salon is “Rock Star Hair.” And rock it they do at SHAG, with a permanent disco ball, club lights, and a DJ setup. MTV (along with TLC, the Discovery Channel, and the Style Network) has featured the shop and its owner, the heavily tattooed Sandy Poirier. If that’s not a rock-star stamp of approval, than we don’t know what is.”TAGS: Best Women's Cut, Boston Phoenix, PRESS, Sandy Poirier, SHAG

Last week, when Salon Magazine announced the Top 100 Salons In The Country, we were all thrilled to get the news that SHAG had ranked within the TOP 50! Not that we get TOO much sleep here anyway, but it’s a little easier to rest knowing that of the tens of thousands of salons out there, they still can’t forget SHAG…
AND, as much as we love celebrating our successes (who doesn’t), the Boston Phoenix Poll swept right in with TWO nominations for SHAG: Best Color Service and Best Women’s Haircut. The only thing more fun than being nominated is winning, so stop by the Phoenix site and vote for us, or use the buttons below to do it automatically!
We know you’re too fabulous to spend all your time sitting in front of a computer screen, but we appreciate you taking your time to vote!TAGS: Best Color Service, Best Women's Cut, Phoenix Poll

Don’t be scared off by his talk of “rock star” style. Shag owner Sandy Poirier may specialize in edgy layers, but his $70 cut can be whatever you want it to be: classic, over-the-top, or funked-out chic.PRESS
