Owner Sandy and stylists Brian Rand, Melanie Rokes, Daleen Scott and Nate Prescott found themselves in Las Vegas at the Palms casino resort this past weekend to attend the Oribe hair show. The weekend included demonstrations from master stylist Oribe himself on new styles and techniques, as well as the chance for stylists from salons across the country to transform their own model using their newfound knowledge.

I wasn’t kidding when I said SHAG cutter Kara Hurston is one to keep an eye on. Her work was recently highlighted in our Grave Gardens shoot (and ad) and on socialite Tinsley Mortimer at the Bebe Fashion Show recently at The Estate in Boston. Maybe this had something to do with why lesbiannightlife.com named Kara their latest FACE “IT” GIRL. Go read Jenn Marquez’s great interview with Kara about hair and life (is there any separation for us?) and browse the photo gallery!

Obviously when it comes to SHAG, we know how to be rockstars. We also appreciate the value of a clear head and healthy body, so along with our beloved client, yoga teacher Vyda Bielkus (founder of B1 Community and teacher at Stil Studio), we are bringing you a night of Yoga and relaxation on Monday, May 17th, 7-9p. You can read the details on the invite below, and DJ Ms Thang will be providing the evening’s music. You may have seen her recently on the cover of Stuff Magazine with her fabulous hair color done by none other than SHAG’s own Daleen Scott…

As you may have heard by now, last week SHAG owner Sandy Poirier spoke on Wednesday night (4/14) at the ICA, as part of a panel discussion called Skin. The two other panel members, Dr. Lakra (the artist whose amazing tattoo art exhibition just opened) and Allen Zadeh (Director of Industrial Design at SmartDesign) were joined by moderator Stephanie Murg (of successful design blog Unbeige) in a presentation/discussion about body art and modification today.

A very special thank you to Laura Sauter of Agency Bel for all of her hard work to a very successful end. SHAG thanks Stuff Magazine and Sauza Tequila for their part in making our cocktail party fabulous!
Also, thanks to Ben Gebo for the myriad of photographs for us to choose from.

After our fabulous cocktail party last night celebrating artist Dr. Lakra and Sandy speaking as part of a panel at the ICA, the SHAG staff woke up to more good news…we found out today that we won for Best Women’s Haircut in the 2010 Phoenix Poll!

Here’s what they had to say about SHAG:
“The motto at this Southie salon is “Rock Star Hair.” And rock it they do at SHAG, with a permanent disco ball, club lights, and a DJ setup. MTV (along with TLC, the Discovery Channel, and the Style Network) has featured the shop and its owner, the heavily tattooed Sandy Poirier. If that’s not a rock-star stamp of approval, than we don’t know what is.”

This past weekend (Saturday, 4/14), the SHAG team was hard at work styling the hair for the Bebe spring fashion show at the Estate. The special host of the evening was Tinsley Mortimer, socialite and star of hot reality show High Society. Her hairstyle shown here is courtesy of the talented Kara Hurston, who is quickly gaining recognition for her high-fashion blowouts and updos.
Whether you’re a socialite or not, your hair will always be A-List when you leave SHAG! Call 617 268 2500 to book with Kara or one of our other stars.

Fashion and style blog New Brahmin recently interviewed Jen Johnson, lead singer of Boston indie band Static Of The Gods. Click here to read what she has to say about her stylist, SHAG’s own Jared Durrance.
You can also see another one of our fabulous clients, interior-designer-slash-model Lyndsay Saffron Almon, in New Brahmin’s recent Golden Standard editorial. Colorist Kenneth Fielding and cutter Brian Rand gave her that multi-hued gold and sleek asymmetrical chop.

Read this great article in Stuff about the upcoming solo exhibition by Oaxacan artist Dr. Lakra, who will be gracing the ICA with his “tattoo”-inked magazine photos, dolls, and other unconventional surfaces. For the opening on Wednesday, April 14th, for panel discussion called Skin, where Dr. Lakra will sit alongside SHAG owner Sandy Poirier and other panelists to discuss body art. If you’re no stranger to SHAG, you know that tattoos run rampant on our own staff…
Click here for to purchase tickets for Skin.
To thank you for the fact that you are currently spending your time on shagboston.com, an advance insider tip: The 4/14 exhibit opening AFTERPARTY will be at SHAG in South Boston (very close proximity to the ICA). The party will begin at 9pm, with details on the way within the next few days. Can’t wait to see you there!
